Questions
What surrogates ask us most.
Can’t find your question? Apply, and ask your coordinator on your first call. Applying commits you to nothing.
Who can become a surrogate with Angel Heart Surrogacy?
You can apply if you are 21 to 42, have had at least one healthy, full-term pregnancy and are raising your child, have a BMI between 18.5 and 32, do not use nicotine or drugs, and live in a state where compensated surrogacy is supported. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
How much are surrogates paid?
First-time surrogates receive base compensation of $55,000 to $70,000, depending on their state. Experienced surrogates start from $65,000. Allowances, milestone payments, lost wages, childcare and travel are paid on top.
When do I get paid?
A monthly allowance begins when your contract is signed. Milestone payments are made when you start medications and at each embryo transfer. Your base compensation is paid in monthly installments from a confirmed fetal heartbeat until delivery.
Everything is paid by an independent escrow company from funds the parents deposit before you start medications, so the money is there before you begin.
Will I be genetically related to the baby?
No. With gestational surrogacy, the embryo is created from the intended parents' or donors' eggs and sperm. You have no genetic connection to the baby you carry.
Do I need my own health insurance?
It helps, but it is not required. We have your plan reviewed. If it covers a surrogate pregnancy, it is used and the parents pay your deductibles and co-pays. If not, the parents purchase a separate policy for your pregnancy.
Do I get to choose the family?
Yes. You tell us which families you would like to carry for, and you read each family's profile and meet them by video before deciding. Nothing is confirmed until you say yes.
Will I know who the parents are?
Yes. Before you accept a match, you learn who the parents are, where they live, and whether they have any other surrogacy journeys underway. We will not ask you to carry for anyone who will not share this.
Do I have my own lawyer?
Yes. You choose your own attorney, experienced in surrogacy and licensed in your state, and the intended parents pay for them. Your attorney works only for you.
How many embryos will be transferred?
We follow the medical standard of single embryo transfer unless the physician advises otherwise and you agree. How many embryos and how many transfer attempts are agreed in your contract before anything begins.
Can I be a surrogate if I had my tubes tied?
Usually, yes. A tubal ligation does not affect your ability to carry an embryo transferred by IVF.
How much time does it take?
From application to delivery, most journeys take 14 to 18 months. Screening and matching take two to four months, contracts and medical clearance about two months, and then pregnancy.
Most appointments before about ten weeks of pregnancy are at the fertility clinic, which may involve travel. After that, you see your own obstetrician.
What if a payment is late?
Complete reimbursement requests are reviewed and sent to escrow within 2 business days. If any payment is going to be late, you'll hear it from us first, with the date it will arrive. Asking about a payment never affects your standing with us.
If I'm not accepted, will you tell me why?
Yes. We tell you why, in writing, within 3 business days. Because every basic requirement is checked when you apply, you won't be turned away months later for something we could have found at the start.
Can I apply if I receive government assistance?
Please apply and tell us. Surrogate compensation can affect eligibility for some public benefits, and we will talk this through with you honestly before either of us commits.
