Surrogates
Your medical screening day: what to expect
For surrogates: what happens at the fertility clinic medical evaluation, how to prepare, what is paid for, and what happens next.
· 4 minute read

Once you and a family have chosen each other, the parents’ fertility clinic will invite you for a medical evaluation. It is usually a single day, sometimes two, and it is the clinic’s chance to confirm that a pregnancy is safe for you.
Before you go
- Your coordinator books your travel, hotel if needed, and meals. You will not pay anything up front.
- You may be asked to time the visit to a particular day of your cycle.
- Bring your photo ID and insurance card, and a list of any medications you take.
- Your partner may be asked to give a blood sample for infectious disease screening.
At the clinic
Most evaluations include:
- a conversation with a physician or nurse about your health and pregnancies;
- an evaluation of your uterus, often a saline ultrasound or a hysteroscopy, a short look inside the uterus with a thin camera;
- bloodwork, including infectious disease screening;
- urine screening for nicotine and drugs;
- a Pap smear if you are not up to date.
Afterwards
Results usually take one to three weeks. Your coordinator will call you as soon as the clinic confirms. If anything needs attention, the clinic will explain it, and you will never be left to find out by email.
Your lost wages, childcare and travel for the day are reimbursed from escrow, or paid directly by the parents if escrow is not yet open.
